Henry van de Velde's »Weimar School of Arts and Crafts«

May 2023 - September 2023

Special exhibition

Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) laid the most important foundation stone for the State Bauhaus in Weimar with the founding of the Arts and Crafts Seminar and the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts, which emerged in 1908, and thus paved the way for modernism. The former premises of this school are still used to teach art and design and are seamlessly in van de Velde's tradition.

The ceramics department was one of the most productive workshops at the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts. The focus of the exhibition is therefore on its products and the relationships with Bürgel manufacturers, who were important partners for Henry van de Velde, but also for the students of the Weimar school. Works by the forgotten students Sissi Brentano, Charlotte Veit and Agnes Peters and ceramics from Bürgel producers from or around Henry van de Velde and his school are on display for the first time. The exhibition thus provides an important impetus for hopefully further research into the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts as a pioneer of the Bauhaus.

The accompanying catalogue to the exhibition is available for 12 euros.
