Come in! Treasures from the depot. For young & old.
May - November 2024
Come in! Our special exhibition is all about "being a child" and children's ceramics. We have rummaged through our depot with childlike eyes especially for this purpose and present small and large treasures for young and old.
There are not only lovingly designed everyday objects and toys from times gone by and the present to marvel at. There is also a clay fairy-tale world to explore, which was made by children as part of a project. There is also a colorful zoo of different ceramic animals to admire, such as a brightly colored Art Nouveau fish or the popular rotating head owl by Heiner-Hans Körting. Oddities such as the "savings chests" typical of Bürgel are of course not to be missed. The second oldest saving chest in the collection is on display. This original version of the money box dates from 1876 and was placed by the mother's bedside on the occasion of Bertha's birth, as the inscription reveals.
The inspiration and centerpiece of the show is a collection of doll dishes from the estate of the Bürgel ceramic artist Christine Freigang. There are lots of colorful plates, small pots and dotted jugs, right down to tiny cups. And a small farmer's cupboard with a dedication: "Christmas 1946. From your grandpa." It was Paul Gebauer who made the incredibly charming doll dishes for his "Christinchen". They are personal items, a piece of family history. These little treasures show us that such miniatures are more than just children's toys. Their loving design and decades of care testify to the affection between grandfather and granddaughter.
Driven by this basic idea, this exhibition is also a little different to the usual. Because our ceramic treasures from the depot evoke emotions. From fascination with what ceramics can do, to the joy of playing in the youngest. And for adults, perhaps even the memory of what it was like to be a child. Come in! Marvel at our treasures from the depot for young and old!
