Emmy von Egidy »1872 – 1946«

May 2022 – October 2022

Special exhibition

Emmy von Egidy (1872–1946) was a fascinating artist with a distinctive dual talent.

On the one hand, she was a ceramicist and sculptor, and on the other, a successful writer. Her urge for sculptural design was evident from an early age. As a child, she always had a few lumps of earth in her pockets for modeling. Later, she was mainly self-taught, because throughout her life, duty came before passion. As the eldest daughter, she had to look after the well-being of her numerous siblings and her ailing mother.

In the autumn of 1898, on the recommendation of the artist Hermann Obrist, she completed a two-month pottery apprenticeship in Bürgel, where she learned to throw on the potter's wheel. Her journeyman's piece was also created in Bürgel. Her ceramics, made in the Jakob Julius Scharvogel art pottery in Munich and in the Thonbrand art workshop of the Meinhold brothers in Schweinsburg, are unique works of art in the Art Nouveau style. The amorphous forms form a wonderful unity with the brightly colored glazes. The fact that her ceramics were very well received is also demonstrated by her participation in important exhibitions, such as the First International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art in Turin in 1902 or the World Exhibition in St. Louis in 1904.

In Munich, Emmy von Egidy was part of the Munich Modernist circle around August Endell, Hermann Obrist, Stefan George, Ricarda Huch, Helene Böhlau and Ika Freudenberg. She was also very active as a women's rights activist. However, she celebrated her greatest successes with her numerous novels, above all with the novel "Marie-Elisa".

. Emmy von Egidy remained unmarried throughout her life. In 1933 she moved to Weimar, where her mother spent the last years of her life, and died there in 1946, impoverished from malnutrition in hospital.

The aim of this exhibition and the accompanying catalogue, which is available for 12 euros, is to honour her work and keep her memory alive.
