Chistine Freigang »Retrospective«

March 2015 – July 2015

Special exhibition

Christine Freigang (1944 - 2014) was the daughter of Walter Gebauer and came from one of the most respected Bürgel pottery workshops. But although she also completed her apprenticeship in her father's pottery, she did not follow a straight path as a ceramicist. Strongly influenced by her grandfather, the multi-colored Bürgel engobe painting reached its final high point in her early work.

But as popular as these traditional and surface-filling decorations were, Christine was striving for something else. It was not the decoration, but the form that was her real concern. Years of searching and trying followed. Glazes with an increasing reduction in the color spectrum - either laid over poured engobes or partially covering each other - gave expression to the tension between the lower and upper edges of her vessels, taking a back seat to clear the way for the mature late work of clarified, simple forms in harmonious proportions.

When the master potter died, she left behind a diverse ceramic oeuvre, which is being shown in all its facets for the first time in an exhibition.

A catalogue has been published for the exhibition at a price of 5 euros.
